A written submission in the format of a standard essay (Introduction, separate paragraphs, conclusion, reference page) that incorporates knowledge gained in the course relating to the criminal justice system and applied to a chosen movie (topic). You will watch the movie and identify features of the movie (characters, themes, subject matter) that relates directly to the course content. In order to do this, you must use the course textbook as a source, along with 4 other academic sources.
This is not a movie review or a summary of the movie. If this is what you submit, you will receive a poor grade.
You must actually watch the movie, simply reading a synopsis will not be sufficient. Specific examples to highlight what you are discussing will be expected.
The movie is meant to be thought-provoking, which means it is meant to stir ideas in your mind about the subject matter you are watching that may connect to topics that we have covered in this course.
A few examples of directions you can go in:
- the portrayal of police in Hollywood/the media in comparison to real life.
- crime control philosophies (one that may relate to the movie you are viewing)
- features of the criminal justice process you can identify and further explain from your movie selection
- police use of force
- deterrence
- police investigation in media vs reality
- social justice issues
- suspect/offenders
- victimization/secondary victimization
- what is justice?
- vigilante justice
- types of crime
- organized crime/gangs
- Incarceration
- victims in the criminal justice process
be creative but make sure to incorporate related course content.
