Migration of Health Professionals

Author’s Thesis

The healthcare systems of the populations living in low earning nations and particularly in the sub-Saharan region have been weakening day to day. This factor is caused by the increased global migration of physicians, nurses and other health workers. This migration is a major threat as it hinders the attainment of equal wellbeing in the region. This paper focuses on the thorough evaluation and analysis of the rights that individuals as a whole deserve, including the rights of the health workers to seek better life and rights about individuals’ equality in accessing health care.

Assumptions of the thesis

According to (Ogilvie et al., 2007), nurses, physicians, and other health practitioners can easily get jobs in their respective careers without obtaining more knowledge and education in their immigrant country. A supposition arises that current global regulations on health care and professionalism do not take into consideration the various rights of health workers and hence need to come up with better procedures for strategies formation. An assumption arises that in the poor countries, the emigration of the nurses bears the highest ratio of other health workers. Therefore, emigration of nurses is considered to contribute the highest level of negative results among all health practitioners.

Arguments for the thesis

The articles statics obtained from the emigration data of nurses in the sub-Saharan countries (Ghana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Malawi) supports the high relocation of health practitioners to the developed countries. The article also highlights the high statics of the immigrant health personnel in the, Australia, USA, UK  and Canada. There also exists push and pull factors that render for this migration. Health workers are driven off by factors such as the poor working conditions, HIV /AIDS plague, and hostile political environments. Nurses are subjected to increased workloads, increased vulnerability to HIV/AIDS infection and demotivation due to the death or immigration of colleagues. Appealing factors include job satisfaction and bright futures in their careers. The authors also highlight the international regulations about recruitment of health workers about migration, ethical factors, and human rights.

Weaknesses of the arguments

Though the authors have provided a statistical argument indicating the massive migrant of health works in the sub-Saharan countries, there is the significance of evaluating the time of when the data was obtained. The statics could create inaccuracy of the real situation at the current date as compared to the earlier stated date. The data pertains to the population of the 1980s which leaves a time gap with which changes and transformation may have occurred in both the number of migrating health workers or improved/worsened health systems. The other weakness is the general assumption that the nurses are motivated to migrate due to activities of their colleagues, for example, the health workers who migrate because of the migration or death demise of their colleagues.

Strengths of the arguments

The highlighted push- pull factors indicate a clear picture of the working conditions in the developing countries. The push factors such deprived remuneration, lack opportunities to advance in their professions, poor working conditions and harsh political environments force them from their regions (Ogilvie et al., 2007). The article also points out that the nurses may be unwilling to migrate, but due above unfavorable circumstances, they opt for relocation. The main pull reason is the predicted shortage of professionals in developed and high income earning countries. The working environment forces the professionals to migrate for betterment hence creating a valid reason to support the migration insights. As projected by the human rights and migration ethics, there should be more focus on international health systems and the rights of health professionals.

As argued by the authors, I concur that the health systems in developing countries are in need for more attention and especially the need to reduce the emigration of health workers from the region. There also should be certification of the immigrant health workers so as to upgrade their knowledge in the fields.

Implications of migration to health and nursing

As indicated by the article, generally the health systems around the globe want in diverse ways. In the less developed countries and especially in the sub-Saharan region, the health systems have been undermined by the insufficiency of the professionals as highly opposed to the perception that these regions lack resources and facilities to enhance higher education.  Shortage of these professionals has been attributed to the massive emigrants hence creating a need for the upgrade of their   qualifications in the developed countries such as Australia and the USA. There also lacks sufficient engraved strategies to support the health care systems, political and economic aspects of the health workers migrants’ countries.

It is significant to create awareness and education to the health practitioners so as to achieve equity across the globe. The remedy to the insufficiency of health workers, the nurses included should be the adoption of the policies to recruit them from the countries where they are in excess to regions where they sparse. Ultimately, Nurses and other health workers should also be encouraged to work in other global regions without work interference and qualification discrimination. This move will enhance diversity and uniform sharing of cultural and lifestyle ideas across the world.
