History and Theory of Urban Design

To prepare a Literature Review on one of the following sub - topics related to the discipline of
Urban Design. A minimum of twenty (20) entries is required in the Literature Review. This is an
assignment to find source material suitable as background research to a major urban design
project:
1. History and Theory of Urban Design
2. Practice and Integration of Urban Design with other Disciplines/Professions
3. Urban Form Typologies - [is the taxonomic classification of (usually physical) characteristics
commonly found in buildings and urban places, according to their association with different categories,
such as intensity of development (from natural or rural to highly urban ...] – Built Form and Open
Space
4. Urban Design in Existing Urban context – such as infill and intensification
5. Urban Design in Greenfield context
6. Urban Design in Waterfronts
7. Urban Design of Downtowns
8. Urban Design Methods, Tools and Techniques
9. Urban Design for Sustainability
10. Case Studies of any of the above
Schedule
Research, annotated bibliography, and the report are to be done individually and uploaded into
the Course Drop Box by November 29, 2016 1:59 pm. Optional report presentation (for bonus
marks) on December 6, 2016.
Literature Review proper format and content
Research in both the internet and the library will be required. Students must follow instruction
on the methods and content of a Literature Review as presented in class lectures. Appropriate
sources must be pursued. Sources must be properly identified and described as to the content
and relevance to the Project. Websites need to be described and annotated along with the
URL.
Report Content
A report setting out the objectives, methodology, findings and commenting on the literature
review sources is required. This will be a 5 – 8 page report, typed and double spaced. It will
include an introduction, methodology, sources, relevance to the topic, quality, annotated
bibliography and any missing sources. There must be at least three (3) different media sources
used in the research such as books, magazines, internet, video, journals, presentations or
newspapers.
