This assessment requires you to conduct your own research using the data provided from the four case study locations: Narrabeen Beach, Jimmy’s Beach (Port Stephens, NSW), North Kirra (Gold Coast) and Noosa.
The State Government has contacted you as a researcher to provide basic advice regarding coastal processes and management. They plan to use your report as a preliminary base for a risk assessment for a newly planned resort. This involves discussing the contemporary beach morphology, identifying the dominant processes occurring along the coastline and performing a risk assessment based on present and future hazards that will likely occur on this coast. Use your knowledge of these processes and concepts to provide advice.
You must produce a report to outline several issues based on your knowledge of existing literature and the analysis performed on available data.
(1) Describe the morphodynamics and key formations of the coast and the likely seasonal change in beach morphology that would occur. What would be the impacts of any potential storms or cyclones?;
(2) Describe the current management regimes that are in place (if any) and discuss whether addition management activities (e.g., beach nourishment) could minimize the impact of erosion and loss of material, for example, by longshore drift (using your data as evidence and literature mining of international case studies are useful here);
(3) Provide a qualitative analysis of the main coastal hazards (e.g. rip cell locations) that would exist for visitors to the resort beach using aerial imagery and/or your knowledge of coastal processes.
(4) Provide a recommendation as to whether the site is suited for the resort. Use your results to support your ideas. If not, suggest an alternative location and justify your. As an external expert you are welcome to include community, economic and recreational considerations in providing advice (however, this needs to be supported with evidence using past literature).
