ERST 631 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES IN ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
TASK
- Produce a short report designed to inform environmental policy-making in Aotearoa New Zealand on one of the following issues:
- Use of neonicotinoids in agricultural practices
- Gene editing to achieve a Predator Free 2050
- Write a short critical reflection in which you explain the concepts/perspectives that informed your completion of this task.
Length
Word count: Report: 1,200 words, Critical reflection: 300 words (excluding references). Your report and critical reflection should each have their own reference list, with references full, accurate and in a consistent recognised scholarly style (e.g., APA). The assignment is to be completed individually.
Guidelines for completion
Your report must provide an overview of the issue, the current state of knowledge across a range of disciplines, any relevant social/cultural considerations, and an overall conclusion. You can use bullet points and a range of communication tools in your report (e.g. images, textboxes, figures or diagrams) as long as they are supported by the text and help you concisely communicate the issue. All text is included in the word count for this task.
You are expected to draw on concepts discussed in Module 5 and 6, but these should serve as guiding principles to help you compile the report, rather than material you explicitly mention or discuss in the report itself. You should instead explain how this material informed your thinking in the critical reflection at the end of the report.
When marking your work, particular attention will be paid to:
- The quality, clarity, and style of your writing.
- The range and quality of your research, in relation to both the issue itself, and relevant scholarly concepts/perspectives that you use to compile your report (which should be explicitly mentioned in your critical reflection).
- Depth of engagement with multiple knowledges and social/cultural considerations, as well as critical concepts associated with science advice.
- Use of (and clear and accurate reference to) a variety of sources throughout your report and critical reflection.
